General description

Avance III is series of Bruker BioSpin Group produced Avance NMR spectrometers (consoles) with up to 8 RF (Radio Frequency) channels, plus lock channel. As the successor of Avance II it is produced from 2007 (?) year for NMR spectrometers with frequencies from 300 to 1000 MHz. As an upgrade console it can be obtained in 200 MHz version also. The main difference of Avance III from earlier Avance series of spectrometer consoles is introduction of the IPSO (Intelligent Pulse Sequence Organizer) and the more extensive integration of different spectrometer functions into one physical block (device). The speed and bandwidth of LVDS connections is increased also, correspondingly, 80 MHz and 48 bits. Together with the application of IPSO, which replaces earlier CCU, TCU, FCU, GCU units, the new AQS/3 chassis, the new SGU/2, 1/4ROUTER, GAB/2 and some other boards were also introduced. Also, it is supporting multiple receivers for the aquisition of the spectra of different nucleus simultaneously.

Avance III like an earlier Avance spectrometers uses oversampling for the signal analog-digital conversion, and the digital lock system working on the same referencing frequency with which quadrature detector of observe channel is feeded. This allows to get spectrum reference frequency on the basis of lock signal and get correct chemical shifts scale for spectrum automatically. The console is controlled by the Bruker TopSpin software (not supported by XwinNMR).

Specifications

Resolution of the frequency generation is <0.005 Hz and <0.0055 deg for its phase. Minimum time for digital frequency, amplitude and phase setting is 25 ns. For frequency and phase real switchings <300 ns and <100 ns, correspondidngly. Timing resolution for operations 12.5 ns, system clock timing is 12.5 ns. Dynamic range of ADC in bits from >16 at SW 5MHz up to 22 at SW <6kHz. Frequency stability <3X10-9 per day and <1X10-8per year.

Architecture

Avance III console is implemented in four different chassies: NanoBay (only 300 and 400 MHz), MicroBay (only 300-600 MHz and up to 3 channel configuration), OneBay (up to 4 channels, 500 and 600 MHz and is possibility for CPMAS also) and TwoBay (Up to 8 cannels and 1000 MHz, and for Solids and Microimaging). The main parts of the Avance III console are AQS/3 (AQuisition System). Some early spectrometers was built on the basis of AQS/2 also. BSMS/2 (Bruker Smart Magnet System). In TwoBay configuration two AQS-s modules can be installed simultaneously which is used for additional RF channels (needed for 8 channel configuration).

In AQS/3 are located the (main) devices (blocks): IPSO (AQS IPSO is capable for up to 4 cannels), DRU or DRU-E, RXAD (Receiver with integrated Analog to Digital converter) or for solids RXAD-BB, REF (REFerence Unit) or REF/2, SGU/2 (Signal Generation Unit), PSU (Power Supply Unit) units, PSM (Power Supply Module) boards. AQS/3 can also contain internal amplifiers (BLA2BB, BLAX300, BLAXH), preamplifiers (PREAMP XBB and PREAMP 1H2H, only for MicroBay configuration), and 1/4ROUTER (Router) (systems with 4 or more channels), PSD/3. In AQS/3 can be 2H-TX(80W) (Lockswitch and 2H 80 W amplifier) also. AQS/3 can contain more than one of each of those units (with some exceptions).

BSMS/2 contains: ELCB (Extended Lock Control Board) or ELCB/2, SLCB (Sample Level Control Board) or SLCB/2, GAB/2 (Gradient Amplifier Board), PSB (Power Supply Board), SCB20 (Shim Control Boards), BVT (Bruker Variable Temperature), L-TX (Lock Transmitter), L-RX (Lock Receiver), 2H-TX (Lockswitch), PNK (console pneumatics).

Additionally, depending on configuration, Avance III console chassis can be configured with External IPSO (External IPSO is needed for spectrometers with 5 to 8 channels), various power amplifiers (different BLA-s), differnt VTU (Variable Temberature Unit), MAS devices, etc.

To the console external devices, like HPPR/2, KBC (keyboard), PC (computer) and others, are and can be connected.
