International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), a world leader in the creation and manufacture of innovative flavors and fragrances, currently has an outstanding opportunity at our Union Beach, NJ facility working as a Research Scientist/Investigator. This position will provide analysis and structure elucidation of small organic molecules in mixtures and isolates using primarily NMR and, when required, MS and other spectroscopic techniques such as IR.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identification and structure elucidation of small organic molecules in mixtures and isolates by NMR (40%)
  • Analysis and identification of natural products and polypeptides by NMR (20%)
  • Assist in MS operation and data interpretation (20%)
  • Maintenance of structure and spectroscopic NMR databases (10%)
  • Operation and maintenance of NMR instrumentation (10%)

Requirements

Essential: Education: Ph.D. or MS degree in Organic Chemistry with a primary focus on NMR (solution state techniques) and a secondary focus on MS, or Analytical Chemistry with a primary focus on NMR, a secondary focus on MS and a strong background in Organic Chemistry, including knowledge of reaction mechanisms.

Experience: with a Ph.D. 0-1 years, with an MS degree 5-10 years of industrial NMR data interpretation, including 1-H, 13-C, 1-D and 2-D data and identification of natural products and MS data interpretation.

Technical knowledge: 1-H, 13-C, 1-D and 2-D NMR and MS of small organic molecules, NMR and MS data systems; organic reaction mechanisms.

Skills: Computer literacy, i.e. use of “standard PC business software packages”; the successful candidate is expected to demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, ability as a public speaker; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work and assume leadership in a cross-functional team environment.

Preferred: NMR spectroscopist experienced with Bruker instrumentation, with analysis of natural products by NMR, with MS (GCMS and LCMS) data interpretation and familiar with other analytical techniques (isolation, GC, HPLC).
