Nowadays NMR date is recorded in the time domain in the form of free induction decay traces.

Once acquired, time domain data often needs to be converted to frequency domain. Fourier transformation is the most frequently used method for such transformation.

to have a spectra we need to do a Fourier transformation, the processing is how to perform this Fourier transformation and also what other transformation we could apply to the spectra, before doing this the spectra is recorded, and their are frequently signal accumulation steps in order to enhanced the signal/noise ratio.

Additional steps could be taken to enhance appearance of data before it's transofrmation to the frequency domain. Some of such steps are:

  • zero filling : it avoid to make the Fourier transformation on noise, and avoid some noise in the spectra, usually it's needed when the delay of spectra is too long
  • apodization (e.g. multiplication of data vectors with exponential, sine-bell, etc. functions
