Homospoil is a technique for dephasing transverse magnetization by application of a magnetic field gradient along z-axis. During the time the gradient is turned on, magnetic field along z has linear variation in the magnitude. Therefore, larmor frequency of the nuclei will have a corresponding variation.
After the homospoil pulse, transverse magnetization in the slices of sample will acquire additional phase, which will vary with height. Net x-y plane magnetization will be zero.
