Under the general direction of the Facility Manager, in the Department of Chemistry's NMR facility, this position provides services in multinuclear and solid state spectroscopy to a wide user community within the Department and University as well as externally. The incumbent will assist the Facility Manager with the preparation and delivery of training in the principles and practices of NMR spectrometer operations; advising solution and solid state NMR users in particular regarding experiment selection and interpretation. The incumbent is also responsible for evaluating and advising on the purchase of new NMR equipment and writing grant proposals to facilitate equipment acquisitions This position includes maintenance of NMR instruments and associated computer systems. The incumbent will act for the Facility Manager in his absence. The incumbent provides technical supervision for instrument technician(s) assigned to the Facility.

Requirements

Education: Advanced degree in chemistry, specializing in NMR spectroscopy including knowledge of multinuclear spectroscopy of solutions, and solid state NMR

Experience: Minimum 5 years relevant experience in a NMR Service/Facility. Broad working knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry and NMR instrument computer programming.

Skills: Ability to prioritize workflow and be self-motivated. Possess strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills to be able to work with faculty, staff and students. This includes the ability to (i) train students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, (ii) communicate with faculty and students in research groups in chemistry and biochemistry, and (iii) act in an advisory role in sample preparation, experimental design, spectrometer maintenance and repair, etc. Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in electronics, software and scientific related areas related to NMR instrumentation. This position requires some physical labour and a high level of concentration.
